The Cri who learned Language became, in Essei terms, civilized. They built cities and used technology. They still believed in Jol and still saw the Orum, but they lived much as the Essei lived: by reason first.

The Cri who did not learn it withdrew to the remote places of their Moon. They called those places the Limit — their word for wherever the mysteries of Jol and of Orumancy are kept. There they remained devoted to Jol, to Orumancy, and to the stories of Zzoor and the Tosai, and suspicious of the Essei and everything the Essei had brought.

From this time on, there were two Cri.
