After the killing, Ulat fell into anarchy: tribes again, as before the Union. The only Ulat still respected were Orumancers who had sheared themselves, so that no one could say they were reading anyone.

The survivors feared being read, and feared being used. Their fear did not leave them.

The Ulat have hated one another since — the unsheared most of all. Many of them prefer the company of Cogum from any other Moon to that of their own people.
